An Awakened Approach to Birth.

Align your mind, body, and spirit to unleash the Birthing Goddess within.
Welcome to Birth Essence

Birth Essence offers an awakened approach to birth education and doula support.

An awakened approach is holistic ... aligning the mind, body, and spirit.
When we're aligned, life flows effortlessly. The same applies to birth.

So often we focus on just the body, but we are so much more than that!
We are spiritual beings with powerful minds. We are all connected.
There is great power in the energetic connection we all have with the Universe.

When we begin to trust, accept and allow that energy to flow, we become more powerful than we could ever imagine. When we let go of everything we have ever believed to be true, the magic begins to unfold. The first step is to open our minds.

Why is the mind important in birth?

Everything begins with our thoughts. Our thoughts trigger feelings and emotions, and together they create our reality. Every thought and feeling has an energetic vibrational frequency. Like tuning in a radio station, we attract experiences that match the signal we transmit. Our thoughts and emotions also trigger hormones within our body that create a physical response. So ... how you think and feel during birth will directly affect your experience, and also your journey into parenthood.

Thoughts and feelings of love and joy are a high vibrational frequency,
therefore they are the perfect foundation for birth.
They trigger the release of "feel-good" chemicals that enhance your birth experience.
Love and joy release oxytocin, dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins which all assist in reducing pain perception and increasing the efficiency of labour.
Oxytocin has long been known as the hormone of love. Not only does it drive your labour, but it also reduces your pain, releases your milk, and bonds you to your baby.
You can see how essential LOVE is in the birth process.

However, we are often faced with feelings of fear or worry during labour and birth.
Fear and worry are a low vibrational frequency. Love cannot exist in the presence of fear.
Fear and worry also trigger the release of chemicals, but these are not so feel-good!
These thoughts and feelings trigger the "stress response"
which can have a negative affect on your birth experience.

How does the stress response affect birth?
The stress response is programmed into our nervous system to protect us in times of danger. It's part of the Sympathetic Nervous System which directs a rapid involuntary response to "dangerous" situations.
The stress response is commonly known as “fight or flight."
The instant that your brain registers an anxious thought or worry, the stress response is activated. Adrenalin and cortisol are released to enhance your ability to fight or run. These hormones send instructions to divert blood flow and energy away from body systems that are not needed for “fight or flight”. In labour, this includes the uterus.
The hormones of stress put you on high alert. They increase your pain perception and slow the progress of your labour ... the exact opposite of the hormones of love.

Birth is not a time for fight or flight.
It's a time where love culminates to bring life into the world.
We want to enjoy that party! It’s a time for joy, and celebration!
It should be something we look forward to, not worry about.

How do we make sure the love and joy are flowing?
How do we prevent our stress response from ruining the party?

We may not be able to instantly undo a long held belief that causes us to fear and worry. But the good news is ... we can instantly switch off the stress response!

How do we switch off the stress response?

We have the ability to voluntarily override the "fight or flight" response.

How? With our breath! Yes, it's that simple!
By controlling our breath we can stimulate the vagus nerve which engages our Parasympathetic Nervous System. This is our "rest and digest" mode that is usually triggered once our worrying thoughts have subsided. It's an automatic response that allows our body to return to homeostasis when the "danger" has passed.
Our breath is the magic key that can activate this response voluntarily,
thereby switching off the stress response.

Through breathwork, meditation, and relaxation techniques we can switch off the stress response, allowing you to focus on thoughts and feelings of love.
Love will release the pharmacy of feel-good chemicals that reduce pain and increase the efficiency of labour, enabling you to POWER up the Badass Birthing Goddess within.

You can do this!
And LOVE every minute of it!
